IU Health Arnett using new cancer fighting machine | WLFI - Wlfi.com

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Indiana University Health Arnett is offering a new cancer treatment option for patients. This new treatment uses the latest technology from Varian Medical Systems ? the Trilogy Linear Accelerator with RapidArc Technology.

Doctors said the accelerator shortens treatment time and delivers a more precise dosage of radiation. Treatment is said to be two to eight times faster than other conventional radiotherapy devices.

"With this new technology, we are able to shape the radiation beam with much better precision to target cancerous tissue and avoid damage to surrounding normal tissue or organs," said Radiation Oncologist Arthur Ko. ?

Dr. Ko said the treatment is also two to eight times faster than other conventional radiation options, making it more comfortable and convenient for patients.

"If patient is here (points)... it makes one circle, one revolution. It takes two minutes to go around, you know, 360 degrees in one revolution and while it's turning, it can actually give all the radiation a patient need(s)," said Dr. Ko.

IU Health Arnett has been using this new treatment since September. According to a news release from IU Health Arnett, RapidArc can be used to treat different types of cancer, including prostate, skin, breast, brain, head and neck, throat, larynx, thyroid, bone, ovarian, lung, pancreas, esophagus, anorectal and uterine.

Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones, 1 million other smartphones, but makes a net loss of $767 million

Sprint's latest financials show that while the network is slowly stemming the flow of cash from its veins, it's not quite there in terms of turning a profit. The country's third biggest carrier suffered a $767 million net loss and an operating loss of $231 million -- much less than the $629 million operating loss it had in Q2, but on-par with the $208 million lost in the same period last year. The business did manage to bring in total revenues of $8.8 billion, but had to take a hit on a $397 million write-down on costs related to Network Vision and the continued pain of the Nextel shutdown.

On the customer size, it added a further 900,000 users, sold 1.5 million iPhones and a further 1 million "LTE smartphones" in the quarter. Those with long memories will know that the company sold the same number of Apple handsets in the last two quarters, with around 40 percent going to new customers then as now. However, churn, the deadly enemy of all carriers, increased to 1.88 percent, up from 1.69 percent in Q2. The network did manage to coax 59 percent of former Nextel customers to stay tied up with Big Yellow, which may account for it selling nearly 1.2 million Direct Connect devices. While it's hardly a rosy estimation of Sprint's financial health, this report doesn't take into account Softbank's $20.1 billion buy-out or the regained controlling stake in Clearwire -- so we're expecting the next financial announcement to contain some more exciting news.

Update: During the conference call, Dan Hesse was asked about adopting a shared data plan to rival Verizon and AT&T, but unlike the last call, he was dismissive of the idea.

Disco Sun: X-Class Flare Creates Strobe-Light Effect

An active region just turning into view on the left side of the Sun has emitted three large flares since Saturday: an M9, an M5 and early today blasted out an X1.8 class flare. This flare occurred around 3:17 am UTC today (or 11:17 pm EDT on Oct. 22). The strobe-light-like effect visible in the video was created by the brightness of the flare and how the instruments on the Solar Dynamics Observatory responded to it. Phil Chamberlin, Deputy Project Scientist SDO told Universe Today that built in algorithms called ?active exposure control? compensate for the extra light coming in from a flare. It doesn?t always result in the strobe or fluttering effect, but the algorithms create shorter exposure time, and thus a dimmer, but still scientifically useful view of the entire Sun. The algorithms go into effect whenever there is an M class or higher flare.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare can?t pass through Earth?s atmosphere and pose a hazard to humans on the ground, but flares like this can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel, and an X-class flare of this intensity can cause problems or even blackouts in radio communications.

A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was not associated with this flare, and the flare was not directed at Earth, so scientists do not expect any additional auroral activity to be a result of this latest blast from the Sun.

The SDO Twitter feed said there is a 75% chance of more M-class solar flares from this active region and a 20% chance of additional X-class flares.

This is the 7th X-class flare in 2012 with the largest being an X5.4 flare on March 7.

By observing the sun in a number of different wavelengths, NASA?s telescopes can tease out different aspects of events on the sun. France seeks Peugeot board seats in return for aid: paper

PARIS (Reuters) - France wants PSA Peugeot Citroen to appoint government and worker representatives to its board, reduce job cuts and guarantee plants in return for a lending bailout, the country's industry minister told Liberation.

In an interview with the French daily, published on Tuesday, Arnaud Montebourg also said the struggling automaker should cancel "hundreds" of planned job cuts and guarantee the future of domestic plants.

Peugeot is weighing a state-backed rescue for its lending arm, Banque PSA Finance (BPF), which funds Peugeot and Citroen dealers and car loans. Montebourg had already warned that any help would come with strings attached.

In his newspaper interview, the minister detailed some of the undertakings he is seeking from the carmaker.

"I want workers to sit on the supervisory board, to bring more balance to strategic decisions," Montebourg was quoted as saying. "I also want an independent administrator on the board to liaise with the government."

The French state has no stake in Peugeot, which in July announced 8,000 additional job cuts and the closure of an assembly plant to halt spiralling losses.

Unlike domestic rival Renault , where the government has two board seats and a 15 percent holding, Peugeot has been slow to shift production from France to lower-wage countries.

Recent downgrades to Peugeot's credit rating threaten to relegate the financing arm to junk status, further widening the competitiveness gap with rivals such as Volkswagen by making its car loans more expensive.

A support package under discussion with the government and French banks would reportedly include postponed repayments on some bank debt and a state loan guarantee, reducing the division's financing costs.

Montebourg also vowed to "weigh the consequences" of Peugeot's alliance with General Motors .

The government is seeking "a commitment from Peugeot to preserve all of its French plants, so the kind of restructuring plan announced in July does not repeat itself", he said.

Sonic Jump by SEGA for iPhone and iPad review

Sonic Jump for iPhone and iPad is, in a nutshell, SEGA's version of the popular platform jumper Doodle Jump that features SEGA's iconic character Sonic the Hedgehog. There are two games modes, Story and Arcade, where you must jump and tilt your way up the levels collecting coins, defeating enemies, gaining abilities, and battleing Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Jump features two games modes: Story and Arcade. In Story Mode, you progress through different levels by jumping your way to the top. When you complete all the levels in a zone, you must defeat Dr. Eggman in a special boss level. In Arcade Mode, you simply try to get as high as you can without dying.

The first zone is fairly easy and doesn't include very many obsticals which is great for beginners because it helps you learn the controls and stategies for the game. For those who are "naturals" at this type of game, you may not find it very challenging, but just stick with it, because it gets a lot harder in the other zones. When you complete a level, you will be given a score based on your time, how many enemies you defeated, how many stars and rings you collected, and the number of power-ups you gained. If you die, you will be given a random tip on the screen that lets you start over.

The controls for Sonic Jump are very simple -- tilt your iPhone or iPad from side to side to move left and right and tap the screen to do a double-jump. I will admit that playing Sonic Jump is a little awkward on an iPad because of it's size, but I'm sure the iPad mini will be a great device for playing Sonic Jump.

Each level will feature various obsticals including enemies, moving platforms, breakable ledges, spikes, and more. To defeat an enemy, you must attack it from underneath (which is a bit counterinteritive when the enemy is a bee). If you make contact with something that causes damage, like spikes or an enemy by falling on it, then you will lose all your rings. If you don't have any rings to lose, then you die. You also die if you fall off the screen, as once your field of view goes up, there's no coming back down.

Other items you will encounter in Sonic Jump are chests that release a special power. These abilities include magnatism to help gather more rings, a protective bubble, a special ring that turns any enemy you get close to into rings, and more. If you jump on a safe, it'll deposit all your rings so that you can be sure that you won't lose them.

As you play the Sonic Jump, you are given various missions to complete that help you "level up". These missions are similar to those found in the popular arcade game Jetpack Joyride [Free - App Store link]. For example, a few of the available missions include wrapping around the screen 8 times in a Story Act, jumping on one platform 10 times, making 180 jumps, and collecting 500 rings. Some of the missions require skill, and some are just silly. At levels 17 and 20, you will be able to play as Tail and Knuckles, respectively.

As with nearly every arcade game these days, there is a store included with Sonic Jump. From here you can buy power-ups with rings that you've collected, or if you want to purchase rings with real money, you can do that too.

Florida's state debt to decline again this year

TALLAHASSEE?Florida will report in December that it has significantly reduced its outstanding debt for the second year in a row, and that continued refinancing of outstanding debt will save more than $1 billion on future interest payments, the state?s top bond finance official said Tuesday.

A second year of lower debt appears to portend a reversal of a long trend. Two years of reductions follow about a decade of increasing debt loads and represent the first year-over-year drops in 20 years.

In a preview of an annual report due later this year, Director of Bond Finance Ben Watkins told Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet that the year-end report is likely to say the state reduced its debt by about $1.5 billion this year, following last year?s reduction of debt by $500 million.

The main reason the state isn?t issuing new debt, primarily in its biggest borrowing program, the Public Education Capital Outlay, or PECO bonding program, because of lower revenue and efforts to be more frugal.

PECO bonding, which funds school construction, relies largely on revenue from utility taxes, known as gross receipts taxes, to pay back bondholders. Revenue from the tax has dropped in the down economy and there hasn?t been any money available for new construction bonding in the most recent year.

Lawmakers have also slowed down funding for land-buying for conservation purposes, another purpose for which the state has in the past borrowed more heavily.

Watkins also said the state has refinanced more than $6 billion in debt over the last three years ? nearly a third of the state?s entire debt portfolio ? to take advantage of low interest rates, allowing for a reduction in interest from 4.65 percent to 4.33 percent.
