Friday night football: Mountaineers get fired up, burn Colts ? Sports ?

VARNELL ? Jacob Mays was not pleased with how he and North Murray played the first half Friday against Coahulla Creek.

He made sure the next two quarters were better.

The senior running back scored all three of the Mountaineers? second-half touchdowns and helped his team snap a three-game losing streak with a 34-0 shutout of the Colts in Region 5-3A play.

Despite being ahead 14-0 at halftime, Mays said he felt the first two quarters were not up to par with his abilities, along with the Mountaineers (5-4, 2-4).

?I was playing in a (ticked-off) mood,? said Mays, who had 195 all-purpose yards and a game-high 83 yards rushing. ?I just didn?t have a good first half.?

On Coahulla Creek?s first two offensive possessions in the second half, junior Justin Peacock reeled in interceptions. Mays and North Murray?s offense used the short fields ? 35 yards both times ? to stretch the lead to 27-0. Mays scored from 10 yards away with 9:33 left in the third quarter and again from 2 yards just a minute and a half later. Kicker Aaron Mendez?s extra-point miss came after Mays? first score.

After the next possession for the Colts (2-7, 1-5) stalled, Mays returned the punt 70 yards for a score to give North Murray a 34-0 lead. The remainder of the game was played with a running clock, per the GHSA?s mercy rule.

?We kicked their butts,? Mays said of the second half.

The Mountaineers started the game as good as they could?ve wanted. On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Brady Swilling found wide receiver Hinton McConkey on a post route for a 58-yard touchdown.

?We ran a post and a wheel (route),? North Murray coach David Gann said, ?and I think their safety came over and Hinton was able to get behind him.?

North Murray didn?t score again until halfway through the second quarter when Christian Bukle finished a 10-play, 67-yard drive with an 8-yard scoring run, part of the team?s 260-yard effort on the ground.

?We did well in the first half defensively,? Coahulla Creek coach Jared Hamlin said. ?On offense, we did some things but had some guys open and some missed opportunities. ... They (North Murray) took it to us.?

The Colts had four turnovers and five total fumbles, losing two.

?(The fumbles) kind of mind-tricked us a little bit,? said senior defensive end and running back Cordarius Tarver, who finished with 60 all-purpose yards and a team-high 44 yards rushing. ?But like I said, it?s just something we?re going to have to work on.?

Blaine Williams, Coahulla Creek?s starting quarterback, left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury.

Backup Colts quarterback Kip Davis left the game in the third quarter with an elbow injury. Freshman Luke Brock finished the game.
